Kunene And The King

By John Kani

Guthrie Theater/ McGuire Proscenium Stage· Minneapolis

Oct 10 – Nov 8, 2026

Dir. Ruben Santiago-Hudson

In post-apartheid South Africa in 2019, Lunga Kunene, a no-nonsense Black caregiver with little patience for privilege or hubris, finds himself providing in-home care for Jack Morris, a celebrated (and stubborn) white actor facing a life-changing diagnosis as he rehearses for the title role in King Lear . The two men are different in every way — race, class and politics, to start — yet they find unexpected common ground in the words of Shakespeare. This refreshingly funny and vital new play by Tony winner John Kani, who also plays Kunene, traces the fragile work of truth-telling in a nation still shaped by its history and reveals how transcending the past may allow us to truly see one another.

The Seagull

By Anton Chekhov, in a new adaptation by Grant Sorenson

The Modern Rep· Minneapolis

Oct 22 – Nov 14, 2026

Dir. Grant Sorenson

Anton Chekhov's first major success, The Seagull is a razor-sharp portrait of people who mistake ambition for purpose and love for salvation. At a house on a lake, desire curdles into obsession, success breeds emptiness, and every relationship becomes manipulation, exposing the intoxicating and devastating cost of chasing relevance, validation, and artistic immortality. In a dynamic new adaptation by director Grant Sorenson, The Seagull embraces the urgency and messiness of Chekhov as a young playwright, stripping away 130 years of veneer to reveal the raw and racing heartbeat of this revolutionary tragicomedy. The Modern Rep, launched in 2026, is an Actors' Equity company focused solely on classical work; this is their inaugural production in their own space in the North Loop.

The Gilbert & Sullivan Very Light Opera Company is pleased to announce that it will present The Pirates of Penzance from October 30 to November 22, 2026. This production, subtitled, Love & Duty in the Old West , has been reconceived and revised by director Joe Andrews, with music direction by Dr. Randal Buikema. The Gilbert & Sullivan Very Light Opera Company is mounting a perennial favorite with a new twist. Transposed to America’s Old West, The Pirates of Penzance maintains its supremely buoyant score, sense of adventure, and improbable paradoxes, but the action plays against the backdrop of the California-Nevada border during the Gold Rush. The pirates are sentimental bandits, the police are sheriffs and deputies, and love and duty win the day, of course! Frederic, a prairie pirate’s apprentice, falls head-over-heels in love with Mabel, one of many daughters of General Stanley. Frederic is due to be released from his apprenticeship as a prairie pirate on his 21st birthday, but there’s a snag … of course. Although very much in love, his dedication to duty is unshakeable. Can he find a way to live happily-ever-after with Mabel? Embark on a delightful journey with The Pirates of Pe
