Flamboyants expresses “Créolité” by blending the cultures and music of New Orleans, La Réunion, and Puerto Rico, drawing on these region’s cultural and historical similarities of colonization and marronage, the resistance to and self-liberation from enslavement. This ambitious creation was born from a meeting between Florient Jousse and Big Chief Juan Pardo, an iconic figure of the Mardi Gras Indians of New Orleans. These artists, along with La Réunion musicians Frédéric Madia and Zélito Deliron and Puerto Rican musicians and activists Marién Torres Lopez and Ivelisse Diaz, pay tribute to the interconnection of this global diaspora. The Laramie Project is one of the most important American plays of the last 25 years — a mosaic of real voices from a real town grappling with an act of violence that changed the country. In 1998, 21-year-old Matthew Shepard was beaten and left to die on a fence outside Laramie, Wyoming in a hate crime that shocked the nation. This play tells that story through the voices of the people who lived it. Tickets for this Mainstage performance will be available October 30.

Join the Mac THDA Dept. Friday and Saturday, 10/9 and 10/10, at 7pm in the Mainstage Theater, for MacFest Stages! As part of Macalester’s annual fall festival, the Theater and Dance Department celebrates student playwrights and actors by presenting MacFest Stages, a staged reading of three original ten-minute plays by Sophie Okite ’27, Max Schuette ’28, and Moxie Strom ’27. This event will take place in the Mainstage Theater (T121) in the Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center. Seats are first-come, first-served with no entry fee. All are welcome. Box office opens at 6:30 p.m., and the show begins at 7:00 p.m. There are no advanced ticket reservations and no late seating available.
