The Modern Rep

Anton Chekhov's first major success, The Seagull is a razor-sharp portrait of people who mistake ambition for purpose and love for salvation. At a house on a lake, desire curdles into obsession, success breeds emptiness, and every relationship becomes manipulation, exposing the intoxicating and devastating cost of chasing relevance, validation, and artistic immortality. In a dynamic new adaptation by director Grant Sorenson, The Seagull embraces the urgency and messiness of Chekhov as a young playwright, stripping away 130 years of veneer to reveal the raw and racing heartbeat of this revolutionary tragicomedy. The Modern Rep, launched in 2026, is an Actors' Equity company focused solely on classical work; this is their inaugural production in their own space in the North Loop.
